Legend of Zelda Movie Set for 2027, Trilogy Plans with Sony Revealed

Nintendo’s beloved fantasy adventure series “The Legend of Zelda” is officially making its way to the big screen, with reports suggesting ambitious plans that extend far beyond a single film. According to media reports, Nintendo is preparing a live-action adaptation that may develop into a planned trilogy, with production expected to begin later this year.
Production Timeline Taking Shape
The Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List website has revealed that filming is scheduled to take place in New Zealand, running from November 2025 through April 2026. This timeline aligns with Nintendo’s previously announced theatrical release date of March 2027.
Story Details Emerge
The Production List has also unveiled the first official synopsis for the film. The Legend of Zelda will follow Link, a young warrior tasked with protecting the kingdom of Hyrule from encroaching forces of darkness.
According to the synopsis, the villain Ganon is portrayed as a brutal warlord seeking to obtain the ancient relic known as “The Triangular Power” (likely the Triforce from the games), which is rumored to grant unlimited power to whoever possesses it. To prevent this, Link embarks on a perilous journey filled with monster battles, dungeon exploration, and puzzle-solving as he searches for sacred artifacts to aid his quest.
Trilogy Plans Revealed by Industry Insider
Daniel Richman, a well-known film industry leaker, has shared that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are planning to develop “The Legend of Zelda” into a trilogy. According to Richman, contracts for the main cast will span three films to be shot over the next six years, suggesting a long-term commitment to the franchise.
Building on Nintendo’s Recent Film Success
This adaptation represents the third Nintendo game series to reach theaters in recent years. Both “Detective Pikachu” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” achieved significant box office success, with the latter becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films worldwide.
Creative Team Brings Gaming and Hollywood Expertise
The film is being co-created by Nintendo’s representative director Shigeru Miyamoto—the legendary game designer often called Nintendo’s “veteran companion”—and experienced Hollywood producer Avi Arad. Arad previously served as Marvel Entertainment’s chief creative officer and has overseen numerous successful comic book adaptations.
Nintendo and Arad Productions will co-produce the film with Wes Ball directing. Ball’s credits include the “Maze Runner” series and the upcoming “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”
In an earlier interview this year, director Ball expressed his vision for “The Legend of Zelda,” stating he wanted the film to be “serious and cool, while being fun and fantastical”—a balance that would honor the beloved game series while creating a compelling cinematic experience.
