Apple Planned a Portless iPhone 17—But It’s Not Happening Yet

Apple initially considered making the iPhone 17 its first fully port-free smartphone, relying solely on wireless charging and cloud-based data transfers. However, the company ultimately abandoned the idea, opting to retain iPhone 17 ports—at least for now.
Reports suggest Apple engineers worked extensively on eliminating ports to streamline design, but concerns about user convenience and European USB-C regulations played a key role in reversing the decision.
Despite keeping iPhone 17 ports, the upcoming model will feature a much slimmer build, made possible by thinner batteries without sacrificing battery life. An exclusive report also suggests that the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will share the same dimensions in terms of length, width, screen size, and bezels leaving thickness as the only distinguishing factor.
While the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be just 5.5mm thick, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to measure 8.725mm in thickness. Apple fans can expect a refined, lightweight device—but a completely wireless iPhone remains a future possibility.
