4x Upscale with AuraSR | Weird Wonderful AI Art
There are plenty of Upscalers available in the open source space and in this post we explore AuraSR which is released by Fal-AI which has been incorporated into ComfyUI using the custom node AuraSR-ComfyUI. This upscaler is a GAN-based Super-Resolution for real-world images, a variation of the GigaGAN paper for image-conditioned upscaling.
It has two versions: first version has some artefact issue when upscaling JPEG files but version two addresses that. I found that using the version one with DeJPG_OmniSR gives the better results in comparison. The model is light enough that you can run on Low VRAM GPUs (as per my research 8GB min) but I was only able to test it on my RTX4080 locally.
I also assume you have basic understanding of ComfyUI and have installed a version of it on your computer. If you are new to ComfyUI I suggest you start here by reading this post on getting started with ComfyUI.
Configuration
In order to get start install the AuraSR ComfyUI node using the ComfyUI Manager which will install the custom nodes required. You can also simply download the workflow and using the option from ComfyUI Manager called Install the Missing Custom Node.
Download the model of your choice v1 or v2 and its accompanying JSON file and save it under ComfyUImodelsAura-SR
folder.
Once installed make sure you restart ComfyUI and Refersh your browser.
You are now ready to Upscale your images by 4x size. I have added a slight Blur as the high resolution image can be a bit too sharp and blurring it by 1-2 radius ensure the image does not look overcooked.
Download Workflow
You can download the workflow below, which provides a JSON file as well as a PNG. You can drag and drop either of these or open them in ComfyUI to get started.

Once you have the workflow you can upload your images into the Load Image node and Run the workflow in order for it get started with the upscaling. I was able to upscale images up to 8-64 Megapixels in a few minutes. You can always generate bigger images as the model can handle it.
Here are some of the sample images I was able to generate using this workflow. Two of these are real photos upscaled and two others are generative AI images upscaled. Can you tell which ones are which?
Let me know if you have any questions on this workflow and about AuraSR. Its a great model that retains a lot of the details while upscaling the image, there is little to no halucination affect and therefore the upscale is genuinely good.
